Are you ready for a truly safe Holiday Season?
As a volunteer firefighter in Paradise Valley, Montana, I have the honor of starting training to become a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Part of the course includes basic CPR and the proper use of the Heimlich Maneuver.
While discussing the Heimlich Maneuver, a friend of mine raised an interesting point. What happens if you are choking and you are alone? Perhaps you are in the kitchen making a sandwich and something gets caught in your throat. No one is around. Time is of the essence. What is your next move?
Be Prepared.
Fireman and paramedic Jeff Rehmen came up with a technique that may save your life. Jeff explains his technique in this short video:

Save a Life.
This video by Roy Shaw is also worth checking out. Roy discusses his thoughts on what to do when choking and you are alone. In addition to showing how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on yourself, Roy makes the excellent suggestion of dialing 911 and leaving the phone off the hook. In this situation, emergency personnel will respond to your location.

It’s always worthwhile to be knowledgeable of life-saving procedures. As the saying goes, the life you save may be your own.
